Barça: Henry prefers Julián Álvarez to Osimhen
Interview
Thierry Henry weighed in on FC Barcelona's potential choice between Victor Osimhen and Julián Álvarez. In his view, both strikers are extremely talented, but the main question is not just about the number of goals scored—it’s about who best fits Barça’s style of play.
Henry acknowledges Osimhen’s power and effectiveness, noting his ability to make a difference on his own and put opposing defenses under pressure. However, he believes Julián Álvarez is a better fit for Barcelona’s game thanks to his tactical intelligence, high pressing, and ability to contribute to the team’s collective play:
When I watch Julián Álvarez, I see a player who understands football in a way that feels very Barcelona. He presses, links up, creates, sacrifices himself for the team, and can play in different positions without losing his impact. Sometimes, these qualities are more valuable than goals alone.
According to Henry, Barcelona has always favored complete forwards who can contribute to the team’s play in addition to scoring goals:
Barcelona has never been a club that looks only for a striker to finish chances. The forward must also help the team play. That’s why players like Eto’o, Suárez, and even Messi fit so naturally into the club’s identity.
This is why Henry leans toward Álvarez, whom he sees as the player who would make the team more effective overall.
