Barcelona are open to signing a central defender before the transfer window closes!
It seems that the transfer market is not over for Barcelona. Deco had previously stated that the Catalan club still wants to sign several players before the current transfer window closes, after having already signed Rodri, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi as the most prominent deals of this summer.
Barcelona want to sign a central defender
One of Barcelona’s biggest problems last season was the defensive system, after Barcelona conceded many goals compared to Hansi Flick’s first season. Therefore, in this transfer market, the goals were clear and explicit for Barcelona, which was to sign a striker who could finish quarter-chances into goals and a central defender who could also support the defensive system.
According to Sport, Barcelona cannot afford to forgo signing a top-class center-back; in fact, it's one of the main targets for the board and sporting director Deco. However, there's one fundamental condition for the club: if Barcelona signs a top-class striker, the option of a center-back will be limited and not necessarily exceptional.
Barcelona are interested in Laporte
Aymeric Laporte, the Athletic Bilbao defender and former Manchester City player, is one of the names Barcelona are considering to strengthen this position. His exceptional technical abilities could help him compete at the highest level and elevate Barcelona's defense to another level. However, there is a slight problem related to Athletic Bilbao's reluctance to let him go, as he is also an important player for the team.
Despite the ongoing uncertainty around signing a striker, Deco is pressing ahead with his work, staying in touch with agents to monitor any opportunities that may arise before the transfer window shuts.
Should the club opt to bring in an additional centre-back without spending heavily, a young acquisition or a late loan are viewed as viable options.
The UEFA Champions League plays a significant role in this reasoning, as Flick is keen to maintain sufficient squad depth to rotate effectively throughout the campaign and prevent key players from reaching the business end of the season fatigued or physically compromised.
