The disappointment is immense for Thibaut Courtois. Knocked out by Spain in the World Cup, Belgium could lose their iconic goalkeeper, who has cast doubt over his international future.

The Real Madrid shot-stopper left the pitch in tears in the 71st minute, feeling discomfort. Replaced by Senne Lammens, he watched as his substitute made a costly mistake, allowing Spain to take the lead and ultimately secure the win. After the final whistle, Courtois was quick to clarify the reason for his exit.

I had no problem staying in goal. I just felt a slight pain when kicking long balls. I wanted to keep playing, but the coach decided that if I wasn't at 100%, he had to take me off. The most important thing is the team.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper then announced his intention to step back from the national team:

I want to take a year off from the national team. Then, I'd like to come back for the qualifiers and Euro 2028. If the federation doesn't agree... then this might be my last match for Belgium.

With 115 international caps to his name, the Real Madrid keeper has left his future with the Red Devils shrouded in uncertainty.
