South African journalist Micky Jnr, a renowned specialist in African football, has revealed that Zamalek has threatened to withdraw from the CAF Champions League if the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approves a proposal to expand the number of participating clubs in a way that would allow Al Ahly to enter the competition.

According to the same source, Zamalek's management strongly opposes any changes to the tournament's qualification system that could pave the way for their arch-rivals Al Ahly to participate. The Egyptian club remains committed to preserving the current qualification format without any modifications.

The development comes ahead of a press conference to be held by CAF President Patrice Motsepe on Wednesday in Johannesburg, where officials are expected to discuss a proposal to expand the number of clubs competing in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, starting from the 2026–27 season.

The proposal, submitted by Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abo Rida, is among the most significant issues currently under discussion within CAF. However, no official decision has been announced so far.

In addition to the proposed expansion, CAF officials are expected to examine several key strategic matters during the meeting.

These include the possible creation of an African Nations League for national teams across various age groups, the adoption of updated safety and security standards, a review of the club licensing system and registration deadlines, and the latest preparations for the 2027 and 2028 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
