Burkina Faso: 200,000 FCFA salary, a revolution in football
The Sovereignty League is gradually taking shape in Burkina Faso. This new regional championship, whose creation was approved by the Council of Ministers last Thursday, is set to be a true revolution for football football. The President of Faso met with the regional governors and sports officials this Monday, October 12, 2026. The meeting provided further details on the establishment of this new competition.
Guaranteed remuneration for athletes
Captain Ibrahim Traoré has announced a minimum monthly salary of 200,000 FCFA for every selected athlete. Additional benefits will accompany this remuneration. Around 1,000 jobs will be created as part of this initiative. According to the president, the measure aims to provide young people with concrete opportunities and promote talent throughout the country.
The regions at the heart of the project
The governors will be responsible for coordinating the recruitment of coaches and organizing regional championships to identify young talent. To fund the competition, economic operators in each region are being called upon to support its operations.

A system will also be put in place to ensure media coverage of the competition. Through this initiative, the head of state intends to promote sport throughout Burkina Faso and contribute to the fight against drug and alcohol consumption.
It should be recalled that the Sovereignty League, which will comprise 20 teams, with one team from each region, does not replace the traditional national championship and is intended to be a complementary sporting revolution.
