Burkina Faso: Government creates new football competition
Burkinabè football is set to welcome a new competition. The Council of Ministers approved the creation of the Sovereignty League on Thursday, 8 October.
A competition close to the fans
The new league will feature 20 teams, in line with the new administrative division into 17 regions. The principle is to have one team from each region. The exceptions are Kadiogo (Ouagadougou), which will have three teams, and Guiriko (Bobo-Dioulasso), which will have two.
The Sovereignty League will not replace Fasofoot League 1
This new regional competition will complement the national first-division championship. Speaking after the meeting, the sports minister said: "At first-division level, Burkinabè football is highly concentrated in the two main cities, Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The Sovereignty League reflects the government's desire to bring top-level competitions even closer to all the regions."
Strengthening national belonging
The project goes beyond sport; it is also political and social. She added: "It is about strengthening the sense of national belonging while valuing national identities. This allows people to identify with a club. It also makes it easier for ordinary citizens to support their club."
