Burkina Faso: Oscar Barro takes the reins of the Stallions U-20 team

The Burkina Faso Football Federation has appointed Oscar Barro as head coach of the U-20 national team. The mission: build a new generation and prepare for upcoming African challenges.

The architect of success from Bobo-Dioulasso

Oscar Barro is no stranger to the Burkinabé football scene. He has coached Racing Club de Bobo-Dioulasso and the Civil Service Club. His first major triumph came with the 2014 Burkina Faso Cup with RCB. In 2015, he ended a 15-year drought by leading RCB to the Burkina Faso Premier League title. He was immediately honored as Coach of the Season. In 2018, he turned the tables in Bobo with the Civil Service Club, steering them to championship glory.

Proven youth credentials

Before this latest return to the U-20 ranks, Barro led Burkina Faso to qualification for the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania, after a dramatic 2-1 loss to Ghana in the December 2020 final. In the tournament, the young Stallions exited at the quarter-final stage after a strong group phase showing.

He also guided the U-17 national team to a fourth-place finish at the 2025 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, and then to the quarter-finals of the U-17 World Cup in the same year. In March 2021, he took charge of the local-based Stallions squad following Seydou Zerbo, known as "Krol."

Barro served as interim coach of the senior national team in 2022, and was shortlisted to succeed Brama Traore in 2025, though he was ultimately not selected. Now, the Burkina Faso Football Federation is counting on Oscar Barro and his experience to breathe new life into the U-20 Stallions.
