Zamalek lost 1-0 away to Zesco United in Group D of CAF Confederation Cup leaving qualification open ahead of the final round.

Surprise result in Zambia

Zamalek suffered an unexpected 1-0 defeat against Zesco United in matchday 5 of CAF Confederation Cup 2025 /26 group stage.

The match played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Zambia. Zamalek went into the game as group leaders while Zesco were bottom without single point. The result completely changed the picture in Group D.

How the match was decided

Zamalek started the game with early pressure and tried to control possession but Zesco slowly grew into the match and created danger from set pieces and wide attacks.

The first half saw strong physical battles in midfield, with chances limited at both ends.

Zamalek goalkeeper made several important saves keeping the score level before the break. At the other end, Zamalek had a few attempts but they lacked sharp finishing.

The decisive moment came in the 61 minute when Zesco awarded a penalty. Amine Hiver converted from the spot to give the hosts the lead.

Zamalek pushed forward in search of equalizer but they failed to break through Zesco’s defense before the final whistle.

Group D turns upside down

Elsewhere in the group, Al Masry lost 2-1 to Kaizer Chiefs adding to difficult night for Egyptian sides.

As a result, both Zamalek & Al Masry lost their grip on the top spot while Kaizer Chiefs moved into first place.

Group D standings after matchday 5:

  1. Kaizer Chiefs: 10 points
  2. Zamalek: 8 points
  3. Al Masry: 7 points
  4. Zesco United: 3 points

Zesco collected their first points of the group stage while the final round is now set to be decisive.
