Cairo calling: Inside the Egyptian FA's ambitious push to host the 2027 Spanish Super Cup

The Egyptian FA is in talks to host the Spanish Super Cup 2027 in Cairo this February seeking to replace Saudi Arabia due to a scheduling clash.

Football fans have grown accustomed to watching the Spanish Super Cup contested in Saudi Arabia but the 2027 edition requires a temporary home.

According to the Spanish newspaper AS, the standard tournament dates conflict directly with the 2027 AFC Asian Cup which Saudi Arabia will host from 7 January to 5 February.

Consequently, the Spanish Football Federation RFEF suspended the Saudi agreement for this specific year opting to extend their long term contract to 2030 to avoid complex financial penalties.

The RFEF has now shifted the upcoming Super Cup window to early February 2027 and is actively evaluating international replacement venues.

The race for the final four

Egypt has officially thrown its hat into the ring. Report from Marca confirm that the Egyptian Football Association recently contacted the RFEF to propose Cairo as the host city.

The Spanish federation reportedly acknowledges that Egypt’s massive, deeply passionate fanbase for La Liga could guarantee packed stadiums and a vibrant atmosphere.

However, securing the hosting rights will be a fierce battle. According to AS & the Spanish news agency EFE, the RFEF is fielding interest from a heavy hitting lineup of potential hosts including Qatar, the United States, Mexico and China.

Because the tournament generates roughly €53 million in revenue, funds vital to the Spanish football pyramid, the final decision will heavily rely on which nation provides the most lucrative economic and logistical proposal.

Guaranteed star power

Regardless of where the tournament lands, the sporting value is undeniable.

The 2027 edition features a blockbuster bracket:

• Barcelona will take on Atletico Madrid, while Real Madrid faces Real Sociedad in the semi-finals

The tantalizing prospect of a potential El Clasico final only drives up the commercial value of the bid. While neither federation has issued an official confirmation of a finalized deal, the ongoing negotiations highlight a continued drive to export top tier European football to global markets.
