CAN 2028: Ethiopia officially submits its bid

Ethiopia is determined to bring the Africa Cup of Nations back home. The Ethiopian Football Federation has officially announced that it has submitted its bid to CAF to host the CAN 2028 tournament, with full backing from the government.

A long-awaited return after more than fifty years

Ethiopia already boasts a storied history with the tournament. The country has hosted the CAN three times—in 1962, 1968, and 1976. Its first time organizing the event remains the most memorable: Ethiopia triumphed at home in the 1962 edition, a victory that still stands as their only continental title to date.

By submitting its candidacy for 2028, Ethiopia now hopes to once again host Africa’s premier football competition, more than half a century since it last staged the event.

A bid officially launched

The Ethiopian Federation affirms it has provided CAF with all the required documentation as part of the bidding process. This step marks an important milestone, but the proposal must now meet the various criteria for organizing a CAN.

Stadiums, training facilities, transportation, accommodation, and overall organization will be at the heart of the evaluation process. Ethiopia is entering the race in a unique context, as the CAN 2027 is set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
