CAN U20 2025: Egypt vs South Africa, a repeat of 2011?

Egypt and South Africa clash on April 27, 2025, at the Cairo International Stadium, kicking off their group stage campaign in the CAN U20 2025. More than just an opening match, it's a reunion clash between old rivals.

Thirteen years after their only group stage encounter in the 2011 edition in South Africa, the Junior Pharaohs and Amajita meet again in the same group of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations. This time, the match takes place during the 24th edition of the tournament, held in Egypt from April 27 to May 18, 2025. The draw, conducted last April 13 in Cairo, placed both nations in Group A, alongside Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania.

An opening match with a taste of revenge

On April 23, 2011, Egypt triumphed 1-0 against South Africa, the host nation, at Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg during the third and final day of the group stage. This defeat marked the elimination of the Amajita on home soil. The Junior Pharaohs advanced to the semi-finals, where they were halted by Cameroon.

On April 27, 2025, the opening duel of the CAN U20 2025 promises to be intense, with a sense of revenge for the Amajita. The South Africans will attempt to avenge their elimination from the 2011 semi-finals at home by punishing the Egyptians. Will they succeed? Will the Junior Pharaohs repeat the feat of their predecessors? Stay tuned…
