Cedric Kaze outlines objective at Sekhukhune United

Sekhukhune United head coach Cedric Kaze has outlined the mandate at the Limpopo outfit ahead of the highly-anticipated 2026/27 campaign set to commence this weekend.

The Burundian tactician was appointed as the new Babina Noko boss earlier this month after his exit from Kaizer Chiefs, alongside co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef back in May.

Amakhosi finished third in the Betway Premiership under the pair's guidance last season, securing a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup and qualifying for the MTN8 for the first time since the 2022/23 term.

Now, both coaches are set for a new chapter in their respective careers, with Kaze succeeding Eric Tinkler at Sekhukhune, who finished in fifth place with 44 points on the log standings last season.

With the new campaign on the horizon, the CAF A License holder says his team is eager to up the ante as they are gunning for a fourth place finish and possibly a CAF inter-club spot.

“It's a team that has finished in the top five for the past three seasons, has played the CAF Confederation Cup three seasons ago. It's only realistic that they are ambitious and the least you can do is finish in the top five,” said Kaze.

"We're going to do everything to push for a top four, and why not even higher? But the important thing firstly is the performance day in and day out - that's what is going to give us the ambition to look forward.

Quizzed on the rationale to spearhead the Sekhukhune project, Kaze attributed the decision to the team's consistency and notable ambition over the past couple of years.

“The past few seasons when we played Sekhukhune, I have always said that it was a very tough team to beat and to come to. And I have seen how consistent they have been in the past few years,” the former Young Africans mentor.

"They have been in the top five in the past few seasons, which means that there is something good that they are doing behind the scenes and that's what motivated me as well to go with them because I know that it's a team that is consistent, it's a team that has ambitions.

Kaze, interestingly, will begin his tenure as Sekhukhune coach with a much-awaited clash against Ben Youssef's Durban City at Seshego Stadium on Saturday, 01 August.
