Champions League: Bodø/Glimt, the giant-killer of Europe’s biggest teams

Bodø/Glimt is gradually establishing itself as one of Europe’s most formidable opponents at home. After defeating Manchester City, Inter Milan and Sporting CP in 2026, the Norwegian club added Borussia Dortmund to its list of victims on Wednesday, October 14, with a 1-0 victory at Aspmyra on Matchday 2 of the Champions League.

The small club from northern Norway continues to shake up the European hierarchy. Against Dortmund, Bodø/Glimt’s players made the difference in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Fredrik Sjøvold scored the only goal of the match from a pass by Sondre Auklend. The Germans then pushed for an equaliser but were unable to beat goalkeeper Nikita Haikin.

This victory extends a remarkable run of results against teams accustomed to the biggest European nights.

Manchester City, Inter Milan and Sporting CP already beaten

In 2026, Bodø/Glimt notably defeated Manchester City (3-1), Inter Milan (3-1) and Sporting CP (3-0) at home. Borussia Dortmund are the latest big team to fall victim to the Norwegians, also beaten by the narrowest of margins.

The win over Inter is part of an already notable European history. During the 2025-2026 season, Bodø/Glimt eliminated the Italian club in the Champions League knockout phase play-offs, with two victories: 3-1 in the first leg in Norway, followed by a 2-1 win in the return leg in Milan. The 5-2 aggregate score sent the Scandinavians through to the round of 16.

These results are no one-off achievement. Since 2020, the club has also recorded notable wins against AS Roma, Celtic and FC Porto in European competitions.

A fortress that is difficult to breach

The figures illustrate this solidity. In the 48 European home matches recorded since 2020, Bodø/Glimt have registered 37 wins, two draws and nine defeats, giving them a 77.1% win rate.

In 2026, the run is even more impressive: six wins in six European home matches, against Manchester City, Inter Milan, Sporting CP, Union Saint-Gilloise, NEC Nijmegen and Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian club has scored 16 goals in those six matches, conceding just four.

European giants now know that a trip to Aspmyra is unlike any other. Manchester City, Inter and Dortmund have experienced it firsthand. And Bodø/Glimt continue to write their history by defeating opponents with a pedigree far superior to their own.
