LASK Linz take on Liverpool this Wednesday, 14 October, in the Champions League with a clear objective: to claim their first European victory against an English club. In six meetings with English teams, the Austrian club have never won, recording one draw and five defeats.

The two teams met in the group stage of the 2023-2024 Europa League. On 21 September 2023, Liverpool won 3-1 in Austria. Florian Flecker scored LASK’s only goal before the Reds took control.

In the return fixture on 30 November, the English side further underlined their dominance by winning 4-0 at Anfield, thanks in particular to a Cody Gakpo brace. Across the two matches, Liverpool scored seven goals to their opponents’ one.

LASK’s overall record against English clubs confirms their difficulties: only one match has not ended in defeat. At home, the Austrian club have recorded one draw and two losses, scoring four goals and conceding eleven.

LASK seeking their first European win

The task facing the Austrians looks difficult given their continental form. Beaten 1-0 by AEK Athens on matchday one, LASK had gone into this fixture without a win in their previous nine European group-stage or league-phase matches, recording three draws and six defeats.

The club can nevertheless draw on a more encouraging statistic: they have lost only two of their last sixteen European home matches, recording seven wins and seven draws. That record suggests they could put up a fight against Liverpool in front of their home crowd.

Liverpool looking to maintain their advantage

The Reds come into this match with significantly more favourable European statistics. They have won 19 of their last 22 Champions League group-stage or league-phase matches, suffering three defeats. Their current campaign began with a 2-1 victory over Atlético de Madrid.

Liverpool also have a strong record against Austrian clubs: eight wins in ten meetings, along with one draw and one defeat. Away from home, the English side have never lost to an Austrian opponent, recording four wins and one draw.

For LASK, the stakes are therefore twofold: to try to claim their first points in this league phase and end a historic winless run against English clubs. Liverpool, meanwhile, will be looking to make it two consecutive European victories.
