Champions League: Shakhtar Donetsk wants to host its matches at Stamford Bridge

Shakhtar Donetsk could play its upcoming Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge. According to the BBC, talks are currently underway to allow the Ukrainian club to use Chelsea’s ground as its home stadium.

Shakhtar still without a home ground

Shakhtar hasn’t played at the Donbass Arena since 2014, the year war broke out in the Donetsk region. Since then, the club has been forced to find alternative venues for its home fixtures.

Their league matches have mainly been held in Kyiv and Lviv, while their European games have also been relocated to Germany, Poland, and Slovenia. For this new European campaign, London could become the club’s latest home base.

Chelsea and Shakhtar, ties strengthened by Mudryk

The choice of Stamford Bridge isn’t entirely surprising. Relations between the two clubs have grown closer in recent years, especially following Mykhailo Mudryk’s transfer from Shakhtar to Chelsea in 2023.

The two clubs already played at Stamford Bridge in 2023 for a charity match organized in response to the war in Ukraine. If the deal goes through, Shakhtar would finally enjoy some stability for its Champions League fixtures, all while competing at one of English football’s iconic stadiums.
