Chelsea officially announced on Friday the contract extension of João Pedro. The Brazilian striker is now tied to the Blues until 2034, a decision that cements his place in the London club’s project after an outstanding debut season.

Renewed confidence for the Brazilian. Having arrived from Brighton in July 2025, João Pedro had initially signed until 2033. Just a year later, Chelsea has decided to extend his stay even further, a clear sign of the club’s faith in the Brazil international. The club has also handed him the number 9 shirt for the new season, further reinforcing his status in the attacking line.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea,” said João Pedro.

The Brazilian also shared that he had always dreamed of playing for a big club and considered it a great honour to commit long-term to the Blues. He also stressed how comfortable he feels in London:

“I felt at home from the moment I arrived.”

The London club is clearly banking on a player who has quickly lived up to expectations. João Pedro, for his part, insists he is fully committed and believes Chelsea boasts an excellent squad capable of achieving great things this season.

20 goals and Chelsea’s player of the season award

João Pedro wasted no time in justifying this trust. Signed from Brighton, he made an instant impact at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup: a brace in the semi-final against Fluminense, then a goal in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, directly contributing to Chelsea’s triumph.

In his first full season, his output climbed even higher. He netted 20 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions, including 15 in the Premier League, five assists in the English top flight, and several decisive goals in the Champions League. He notably bagged a brace in Naples and a hat-trick against Aston Villa.

This consistency saw him finish as Chelsea’s top scorer and, above all, he was named the 2025-2026 Player of the Season by the fans, winning over 60% of the vote. His spectacular bicycle kick against Nottingham Forest was also voted the club’s goal of the season.

An extension after major heartbreak with Brazil

This recognition from Chelsea stands in stark contrast to the disappointment he experienced a few months earlier with the Seleção. Despite his performances, João Pedro was not selected by Carlo Ancelotti for the 2026 World Cup, with the manager opting for Neymar among his 26-man squad. The Brazilian had been called up several times by Ancelotti and was seen as a key option in attack.

The decision sparked criticism, especially as João Pedro had just enjoyed the best season of his career. Ancelotti himself admitted how tough the choice was: “For the season he had in Europe, he probably deserved to be on that list,” while explaining that the staff ultimately went with another player.

A few months after this international setback, João Pedro has received a resounding response from Chelsea. By extending his contract until 2034 and giving him the number 9 shirt, the London club has made it clear that the Brazilian striker is set to be one of the faces of its long-term project.
