Chelsea: the John Stones gamble is taking shape
Chelsea are reportedly considering signing John Stones on a free transfer to inject experience into their backline, but the Englishman's fitness record urges caution.
Chelsea could seize a great opportunity in the free agent market. According to the Daily Mail, the Blues are now seriously interested in John Stones, who has reached the end of his contract with Manchester City. Despite recent denials, this option has gained traction in recent weeks. However, no agreement or advanced negotiations have been announced at this stage.
Arsenal are also reportedly monitoring the England international’s situation. The Gunners could step up their pursuit if William Saliba is forced to undergo back surgery, which could sideline him for part of the start of the season.
A champion available, but hampered by injuries
Stones would bring a wealth of experience to a Chelsea side that finished last Premier League season in tenth place. Over ten years at Manchester City, the defender played 295 matches, scored 19 goals, provided nine assists, and won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.
However, his availability remains the main question mark. In the 2025-2026 season, Stones featured in just 18 matches across all competitions, including nine in the league, tallying 1,144 minutes on the pitch. He failed to score or register an assist. The previous season, he had already played only 20 games. His recurring fitness issues mean Chelsea would need to thoroughly assess his condition before offering a contract.
An enticing move, but not without risk
From a footballing perspective, his profile brings plenty of positives. Comfortable building from the back, Stones can play as a centre-back, inverted full-back, or even as an extra midfielder during possession phases. His technical quality and tactical awareness could add greater composure to the Blues' build-up play.

His free agent status also makes this move attractive compared to the fees demanded for other defenders. However, a free transfer does not necessarily mean a cheap deal: his wages, signing-on bonus, and contract length would all need to reflect his physical guarantees.
Chelsea keeping their options open
The London club is continuing to explore several avenues. Bournemouth are said to have rejected a £64 million offer for midfielder Alex Scott, while Crystal Palace are reportedly demanding close to £60 million for Maxence Lacroix. Jacobo Ramón also remains on the Blues’ shortlist.
Chelsea are also keen to keep Josh Acheampong despite several expressions of interest. In this context, Stones appears more as an experienced and immediately available option than as the club’s sole defensive priority. His potential arrival will depend above all on the medical assurances he can provide.
