Chelsea: Xabi Alonso speaks about Enzo Fernández

Enzo Fernández is set to start the season with Chelsea. Despite his name circulating for weeks in the transfer market, Xabi Alonso has made it clear he wants to keep hold of the Argentine midfielder.

Xabi Alonso counts on Enzo Fernández

Since joining Chelsea in January 2023, Enzo Fernández has quickly established himself as one of the cornerstones of the London side. The 25-year-old midfielder is coming off a strong individual campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing 4 assists in 36 Premier League matches. Asked about his player's future, Xabi Alonso left little room for doubt:

Enzo Fernández is a Chelsea player. He's a very, very good player. He trains really well, with a great attitude. We’re happy with him and he’s preparing for Monday [against Fulham].

The Spanish manager also stressed that the Argentine is training hard and preparing as usual for the start of the new campaign. Fernández is currently under contract with Chelsea until June 2032. In recent months, there has been reported interest from Manchester City, with a price tag said to be set at around £120 million.

Chelsea wants a fresh start

Keeping Fernández is part of Xabi Alonso’s ambitions, as he takes charge at Chelsea with the aim of reviving a team that finished last season in 10th place in the Premier League. The Argentine midfielder is expected to be one of the key pillars Alonso relies on to launch this new era.

For Fernández, the upcoming season is a crucial opportunity to prove he can become one of the leaders of Alonso’s project. If he maintains his output and cements his place in the Spanish manager’s system, the transfer rumours could quickly fade into the background.
