Chivu outlines Inter’s Champions League ambitions
Interview
Cristian Chivu wants to see Inter return to the heights of European football. After a disappointing Champions League campaign, the Nerazzurri coach recalls that the club’s status requires it to target the highest objectives, including winning the trophy.
Inter want to turn the page
Champions League finalists in 2025, Inter endured a far more complicated European campaign last season, being eliminated in the round of 16 by Norwegian club Bodø/Glimt. The defeat made a strong impression and reinforced the club’s determination to respond. For Chivu, the ambitions must match Inter’s history:
The status of this club requires us to try to achieve every objective.
The Romanian coach also embraces the idea of winning the competition, even though he acknowledges that ambition is not enough without rigorous daily work:
When it comes to dreams, it is not necessarily essential to achieve them, but you have to do good work. Talking about dreams does not necessarily mean that we are talking about winning the entire competition, but it is part of our responsibility to try to achieve such an objective
“We do not underestimate anyone”
Chivu knows that winning the Champions League requires far more than financial resources or top-level individual talent. In his view, no player or coach can guarantee final victory:
Money cannot buy you the Champions League title. There is no player or coach capable of giving such a guarantee. You need courage, but the work you do is the most important thing.
The Milan coach also wants his team to learn from its previous European campaign. In particular, he stresses the need to respect every opponent, regardless of their status:
We do not underestimate anyone. We have a certain maturity and we always go onto the pitch with a sense of responsibility and the right attitude, with the desire to dominate.
The club have not won the Champions League since the 2009-2010 season. To reclaim that success, the Nerazzurri will have to combine collective control, consistency and the ability to deliver in knockout matches.
