Copa Libertadores: Fluminense players assaulted after qualification

Yesterday, Fluminense's qualification for the Copa Libertadores semi-finals was followed by violent incidents at the Ciudad de Vicente López stadium.

Indeed, as soon as the final whistle was blown, Platense supporters invaded the pitch while the Brazilian players were celebrating their qualification. According to ESPN, some of them attacked Fluminense players, who were forced to run towards the dressing rooms, while clashes also broke out with visiting supporters.

Plastic chairs were thrown and a flag belonging to the Brazilian club's fans was stolen. The police eventually intervened to regain control of the situation. Tensions had risen after Platense's 2-1 victory, which was not enough to overturn Fluminense's advantage after their 2-0 win at the Maracanã in the first leg.

Provocations between the stands, notably with Brazilian supporters shouting “eliminated” at their Argentine counterparts, preceded the pitch invasion. Another incident also sparked controversy during the broadcast: Castillo was also seen with a facial injury after the match, but the player clarified that it was not related to the clashes.
