Cristian Romero moves closer to Inter Milan

A verbal agreement is said to be in place between Inter and Tottenham for Cristian Romero, whom the Italian champions are eager to pair with John Stones as early as this summer.

Inter Milan continue to stockpile experienced defenders. After securing John Stones on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City, the Lombardy club now appears to be closing in on the signing of Cristian Romero. According to ESPN Argentina, a verbal agreement has been reached with Tottenham, though several details still need to be ironed out before the deal is finalized.

Under contract until June 2029, the Spurs captain had previously made it clear he wished to leave London. Faced with his stance, Tottenham has finally agreed to open the exit door for him, four years after his arrival from Atalanta.

Inter stockpiling defenders to defend their Scudetto

Romero would become another top-tier option in a back line already featuring the likes of Alessandro Bastoni, Benjamin Pavard, Yann Bisseck, and John Stones. At 28, the Argentine would bring his aggression, leadership, and deep knowledge of Italian football to a side determined to retain their title.

Inter Milan dominated the most recent Serie A campaign, finishing with 87 points thanks to 27 wins, six draws, and only five defeats. The Nerazzurri finished eleven points clear of Napoli and boasted the league's best goal difference with a +54 tally. The addition of two seasoned defenders like Stones and Romero is a clear statement of intent from the club to remain on top.

Romero, a key player seeking a new challenge

Despite a season disrupted by a knee injury and Tottenham's collective struggles, Romero remained one of the Spurs’ mainstays. He featured in 23 Premier League matches, scoring four goals and providing one assist, as well as eight Champions League outings. Since 2021, he has now made over 150 appearances in a Spurs shirt.

The defender truly underlined his importance with Argentina during the 2026 World Cup. A starter in all seven matches for La Albiceleste, he helped guide his country to the final, where they fell to Spain after extra time (0-1). His big-match experience and determination to leave Tottenham make Inter a particularly logical next destination.
