CAF Confederation Cup: AS PL 2000 snatch a draw against Jwaneng Galaxy
An encouraging start for AS Port Louis 2000. On Friday evening at the Côte-d’Or sports complex, the Mauritian club held their own against Jwaneng Galaxy, drawing 1–1 in the first leg of the first qualifying round of the CAF Cup.
Early setback, but the home side fight back
Things got off to a bad start for the home side. As early as the 4th minute, Ramotse Olebogeng opened the scoring for the Botswanians from a free-kick. AS PL 2000 kept their cool. Stewel Beeharry levelled the score in the 28th minute. The goal reignited the match and calmed the crowd.
The rest of the match came down to the finer details. Chances were created at both ends, but no goals were scored. The final whistle blew with the score at 1–1. AS PL 2000 showed character and some fine defensive organisation. Jwaneng Galaxy kept possession but lacked a cutting edge in the final thirty metres.
It will all be decided in Botswana
The return leg is scheduled for 12 September. It will be a perilous away trip for the Mauritians, who will have to hold out far from home if they are to progress to the second and final preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup. With this home draw, ASPL 2000’s hopes remain intact. It will take clinical finishing and solid defence to beat Galaxy on their own turf.
