There are reports indicating that there is much regret within Chelsea's offices for not signing Spanish star Fermín López from Barcelona.

It was a great opportunity for Chelsea to sign Firmino Lopez

According to talkSPORT, Chelsea were handed a golden opportunity to sign Barcelona midfielder Fermín López during the summer of 2025, when the Catalan giants were open to negotiating his departure. However, the London club refused to stretch beyond the €50 million asking price, and the Spaniard ultimately stayed at Camp Nou. Fast forward one year, and that hesitation is proving increasingly costly for the Blues.

López Shines as Barcelona's New Lampard

The 23-year-old has developed into a pivotal figure under Hansi Flick and has launched the 2026/27 LaLiga campaign in breathtaking fashion, netting four goals and supplying two assists in just four league outings. His latest masterclass came in Barcelona's 5-0 demolition of Valencia, where he scored once and created two more.

His intelligent late runs into the box, sharp movement behind defenders, and consistent goal contributions from midfield have even drawn comparisons with Chelsea icon Frank Lampard. For Chelsea, watching López flourish elsewhere while their own midfield struggles for similar output makes their decision to walk away all the more difficult to accept.
