Édouard Mendy prefers AFCON to the Champions League

Édouard Mendy attaches particular importance to the titles he won with Senegal. In an interview with The Guardian, the 33-year-old goalkeeper said that his Africa Cup of Nations triumph was far more valuable than his Champions League victory with Chelsea.

Édouard Mendy won AFCON with Senegal in 2022 after beating Egypt in the final. It was a historic title for the Senegalese national team, which won its first Africa Cup. For the goalkeeper, the success remains the most important of his career:

Winning AFCON was the best moment of my career. It was ten times better than winning the Champions League.

Mendy, who had also won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, believes the two titles cannot be compared because of their different significance.

Winning for your club is something incredible. But you cannot compare it to a victory with your country, especially when that country had never won anything before.

A major title with Senegal

The goalkeeper played an important role in Senegal’s triumph in 2022. In particular, he saved a penalty during the shootout in the final against Egypt. Mendy has won 60 caps for Senegal. He recently announced his decision to end his international career.

At club level, Édouard Mendy also has an impressive record. He joined Chelsea in 2020 and won the Champions League with the Blues a few months later. Since 2023, the goalkeeper has been playing in Saudi Arabia for Al-Ahli, where he continues his club career.
