Enugu Rangers secured a 2-0 victory over MC Alger on Sunday 18 October 2026 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary-round tie at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

The Algerian champions endured a particularly difficult second half, with Oussama Benhaoua receiving a straight red card in the 53rd minute.

The result gives Fidelis Ilechukwu's side a significant advantage ahead of the return fixture in Algiers on 23 October when both clubs will compete for a place in the 2026 /27 group stage.

Enugu Rangers vs MC Alger: How the match unfolded

Rangers emerged with a 2 goal victory and a clean sheet, delivering the result their captain Chidiebere Nwobodo had identified as the team's objective before kick off.

The most significant disciplinary incident recorded in the available match data came in the 53rd minute when MC Alger's Oussama Benhaoua was sent off.

The dismissal left Ben Yahia's team with ten players for the remainder of the encounter, increasing the difficulty of their away assignment.

However, the available verified match log does not yet identify the two goalscorers or establish the precise timing of the goals.

Tactical Analysis: Benhaoua's Red Card complicates MC Alger's plans

The dismissal was a major setback for MC Alger who had entered the contest hoping to establish a favourable position before returning home.

Playing with 10 men for much of the second half inevitably reduced the Algerian side's tactical flexibility.

Ben Yahia had already been forced to adjust his defensive selection before the match, with captain Ayoub Abdellaoui unavailable through injury.

Abdelkader Menezla started in defence while Ayoub Ghezala wore the captain's armband. Zakaria Naidji, Zinedine Ferhat and Mohamed Saliou Bangoura were also included in the starting lineup.

The red card added another complication to an already disrupted team selection.

For Rangers, the strongest conclusion from the result is their ability to combine two goals with a clean sheet against experienced continental opposition.

That defensive achievement is particularly important in a two-legged qualification tie, where the margin established in the opening fixture can significantly influence the return match.

Without verified possession, shooting and chance creation statistics, however, it would be premature to attribute the victory to a particular pressing strategy or pattern of attacking dominance.

Rangers deliver the defensive performance Nwobodo demanded

Before the encounter, Rangers captain Chidiebere Nwobodo had emphasised the importance of defensive concentration.

Speaking through the club's official website (https://www.rangersintl.com/news/v948aprfwk9j3gaujwss09i0), Nwobodo said:

"First thing, we shouldn't concede here"

His team ultimately achieved that objective while establishing a two-goal lead.

The result represents a significant improvement on Rangers' previous continental qualifying round when they needed a penalty shootout to eliminate Benin's AS Sobemap after two 1-1 draws.

MC Alger, by contrast, entered the tie after eliminating ASN Nigelec 5-0 on aggregate.

The difference between those previous results makes Rangers' victory particularly significant in the context of their qualification campaign.

What happens next for MC Alger?

The return leg is scheduled for Friday 23 October in Algeria.

MC Alger must now overturn a two-goal deficit to preserve their hopes of reaching the CAF Champions League group stage.

A victory by 3 clear goals would guarantee progression for Ben Yahia's side while a 2 goal victory would leave the teams level on aggregate and require the tie to be resolved under the competition's regulations.

Benhaoua's dismissal also creates a selection concern ahead of the second leg, with his disciplinary eligibility requiring confirmation under CAF's applicable rules.

For Rangers, the challenge is to protect the advantage secured in Abeokuta and avoid repeating the 1976 semi final outcome when they defeated MC Alger 2-0 in Nigeria before losing 3-0 in Algeria.

As previously highlighted in Foot Africa's analysis of the second preliminary round fixtures, the two clubs entered this encounter with contrasting qualification records.

Fifty years after that historic continental meeting, Rangers have once again established a two goal advantage against MC Alger.

Whether the Nigerian side can preserve it in Algiers will determine which team progresses to the group stage.
