Europa League: Senou Coulibaly and Mihlali Mayambela decisive in Omonia’s victory
Omonia Nicosia defeated Celje (3-0) on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on the second matchday of the Europa League. Malian Senou Coulibaly scored his team’s third goal, while South African Mihlali Mayambela stood out with an assist.
Jaden Montnor opened the scoring in the 16th minute, before Muamer Tankovic doubled the lead in the 59th minute. In the 84th minute, Senou Coulibaly sealed the Cypriot side’s victory by converting a pass from Mayambela, who had come on in the 75th minute.
Senou Coulibaly already on the scoresheet in the league
The Malian defender is continuing his season in strong form. Before this European fixture, he had played four Cypriot league matches during the 2026-2027 season, for a total of 360 minutes and one goal. He notably scored in the victory over Krasava Ypsonas (4-1) on September 20. His goal against Celje therefore adds to his season tally.
Mihlali Mayambela makes his mark as a substitute
For his part, Mihlali Mayambela had been limited to little playing time since the start of the season. Before the trip to Slovenia, the South African winger had played five matches in all European competitions for Omonia, for a total of 191 minutes. He had scored no goals and provided no assists in those matches. His contribution against Celje therefore gets his assist tally off the mark this season.
With this victory, Omonia Nicosia leave Slovenia having scored three goals and conceded none. For Coulibaly, the evening also confirms his ability to contribute offensively from defense. Mayambela, meanwhile, made the most of his appearance from the bench to influence the result.
