Portuguese coach Paulo Duarte, the manager of Guinea, was full of praise for his compatriots Miguel Cardoso and Alexandre Santos, who have steered their respective clubs, Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) and AS FAR (Morocco), to the final of the CAF Champions League 2025-2026.

“Portuguese coaches have evolved tremendously over the years, largely thanks to the influence of major figures like José Mourinho, who blazed a trail for an entire generation. For me, he has been one of the main driving forces behind this progress,” said the former Boavista player in an interview with Foot Africa.

“They have brought new ideas, greater game awareness, and modern training methods. They have also helped define what today’s football is all about: organization, high standards, and professionalism. Today, the Portuguese coach is recognized for adaptability, tactical discipline, and a deep understanding of the modern game. These are highly sought-after qualities, especially in Africa,” he continued.

“Miguel Cardoso is a great example. After a journey that hasn’t always been straightforward, he’s managed to make his mark on the African continent. I’m really happy for him because he represents Portuguese coaches with distinction. Reaching a third consecutive final is an outstanding achievement. I hope this time he can clinch the title with his club,” concluded the manager of the ‘Syli National’.
