Fan Chaos Forces Abandonment of Montpellier vs. Saint-Étienne Match
The Ligue 1 fixture between Montpellier & Saint Etienne was abandoned on Sunday night due to intense crowd disturbances at Stade de la Mosson.
Fireworks & Flames in the Stands
Tensions flared after Montpellier conceded 2nd goal early in the second half. Frustrated home supporters began throwing fireworks onto the pitch and setting fires in the stands creating chaotic scene.
According to The Sun, the match was initially paused for around 3 minute before briefly resuming. However a fire broke out in the front section of the Montpellier supporters stand sending black smoke billowing into the air.
Safety Concerns End the Match
Fans were seen fleeing to the back of the stands as the fire intensified. The referee promptly halted the game and sent players to the dressing rooms while authorities worked to control the situation.
Approximately 30 minute later, spectators were ordered to evacuate the stadium and officials declared the match abandoned due to safety concerns.
