FC Barcelona: Frenkie de Jong dealt new setback
Frenkie de Jong is making progress in his recovery, but a quick return to action with FC Barcelona remains out of reach. Persistent pain continues to delay his reintegration with the squad.
The recovery of Frenkie de Jong is moving forward, but his comeback to competitive football is still uncertain. According to Sport, the Dutch midfielder returned to the pitch at Ciutat Esportiva on Tuesday to do some running and individual exercises. It's an encouraging step, but still a long way from rejoining the group.
Pain delays De Jong's comeback
After suffering a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee during the 2026 World Cup, De Jong has been undergoing conservative treatment for several weeks. The 29-year-old still feels pain when he tries to slow his run, a warning sign that forces the medical staff to proceed with caution. Barça has not set any return date, and his absence could extend beyond the next fixtures.
This development is a blow for FC Barcelona, as they lose one of their most dynamic midfielders, renowned for breaking lines with his dribbling and initiating attacks. Last season, the Dutch international played 37 matches across all competitions, scoring once and providing five assists.
Rodri eases midfield urgency
However, De Jong's absence does not put Barça in a crisis at the start of the season. The Catalan club bolstered their midfield this summer with the arrival of Rodri, who can operate as a holding midfielder, bringing control, work rate, and defensive stability. His signing allows Hansi Flick to avoid rushing De Jong back into action.
The two midfielders offer different profiles: Rodri brings composure in front of the defense, while De Jong excels at ball progression and surging runs forward. Barça can therefore manage this absence without taking unnecessary medical risks. The priority is now clear: ensure the pain is completely gone before the Dutchman returns to full team training.
