Sergio Romero has called time on his playing career, but the 39-year-old has no intention of stepping away from the game.

The former Argentina international confirmed his retirement today, immediately signaling his ambition to transition into management—not as a goalkeeping coach, but as a head coach with his own staff already in place.

Romero leaves behind a career that spanned nearly two decades and took him across Europe and South America. He represented clubs including AZ Alkmaar, Sampdoria, Monaco, Manchester United, Venezia, Boca Juniors, and Argentinos Juniors. On the international stage, he earned 96 caps for Argentina, playing a key role for La Albiceleste across multiple major tournaments.
