Former Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro maintains winning streak in Europe

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro guided his team AIK Fotboll to a third consecutive victory in the Allsvenskan after a 2-0 win over GAIS over the weekend.

Taha Ayari broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half, before Kevin Filling doubled the lead in the 58th minute, ensuring maximum points remain at home.

AIK, as a result, climbed to fourth place on the log standings, having accumulated 21 points in 13 league outings comprising of six wins, three draws, and four defeats.

Riveiro's troops are now two points shy of the UEFA Conference League spot currently occupied by third-placed Hacken, while Hammarby sit second with 26 points.

Notably, AIK visit Hacken in their next assignment on Monday, 27 July, in a game that could see the Spanish mentor and his team strengthen their bid for Europe next season.

The 50-year-old tactician took over the reins in January before the commencement of the league in Sweden, inking a deal that runs until December 2028.

He was unattached before taking charge at AIK after a tumultuous spell with Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly, where he was shown the exit door three months into the job.

Contrary to his stay in Cairo, Riveiro enjoyed a trophy-laden stint with Pirates, guiding the Soweto juggernauts to five domestic cup titles during his time at the helm.

Whether Riveiro will see out his contract at AIK remains to be seen amid links to the vacant Bafana Bafana job as Broos' successor.
