Friendly (F): South Africa wins the double header against Malawi
The South African women's national team successfully concluded their series of friendly matches against Malawi. The Banyana Banyana defeated the Scorchers with an aggregate score of 5-1.
As expected, the women's teams from South Africa and Malawi faced off this April during the international break for women's football. It was also an opportunity for the Banyana Banyana to prepare for the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations scheduled in Morocco next July.
Two convincing victories for Banyana Banyana
The first match, played on April 5, 2025, at the UJ Soweto Campus Stadium, saw South Africa triumph 3-0 over Malawi. Mthandi (13', 51'), Motlhalo (21') secured victory for the Banyana Banyana. This match also marked the farewell of South African women's team legend Noko Matlou (123 caps).
Optimal preparation for South Africa for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, lessons for Malawi
These two victories boost Banyana Banyana's confidence ahead of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which will take place from July 5 to 26, 2025. On the other hand, Malawi, despite the defeats, showed encouraging signs that will be valuable for upcoming continental challenges, including the second round of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for next December.
