From Nike to On: How Mbappé's prototype boot debut ended in a Madrid medical room

The incident against Turkey
Mbappé proved decisive in the Nations League encounter, scoring the only goal of the match before his evening was cut short. Just before the hour mark, the forward grabbed his left knee and was forced to leave the pitch.
Following the final whistle, France head coach Zinedine Zidane announced that initial medical examinations pointed to a left knee tendon injury. Zidane confirmed that the national team would not take any risks and that Mbappé had been ruled out for the remainder of the international break.
The boot debate: Did the equipment change contribute?
The injury occurred during a transitional period for the forward's footwear. After ending a long term partnership with Nike, Mbappé wore unbranded white boots during the recent Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid.
He later tested prototype boots from On during France training sessions before officially debuting the brand against Turkey.
The timing of the injury immediately sparked speculation regarding a potential link to his new footwear. However, sports medicine specialists have urged caution.
Physiotherapist Ángel Villanueva explained that while changes in sole stiffness and stud configuration can slightly alter a player's biomechanics, such as acceleration and directional shifts, it does not automatically make the boot the direct cause of an injury.
Similarly, football medicine researcher Katrine Okholm Kryger noted that while stud traction levels can influence the risk of joint or ligament injuries, elite players typically integrate new footwear gradually during training to mitigate these specific risks.
A multi-factor setback
While equipment changes are an easy target for blame, the reality of elite football injuries is rarely one dimensional. Fitness coach Lucas Haby and performance consultant Alexandre Marles, who has previously worked with the French national team and Paris Saint Germain, emphasised that players of Mbappé’s calibre receive bespoke boots tailored precisely to their feet following extensive testing.
Given that Mbappé played over 50 minute and executed the mechanics required to score before the injury occurred, the setback is likely the result of combined factors.
The accumulation of muscular fatigue, the physical demands of match conditions and the specific mechanics of his planting leg during a shot or sprint are far more likely to have triggered the tendon issue than the boot alone.
What happens next?
Mbappé has already returned to Real Madrid headquarters to undergo comprehensive imaging and medical tests that will determine the exact severity of the tendon injury and his estimated recovery time.
According to Spanish daily AS, there is a palpable sense of concern within the Madrid camp, as the forward had previously experienced minor issues with his left knee during portions of last season.
The club's medical staff will now dictate his rehabilitation schedule ahead of their return to domestic and European action.
