Europa League: Junior Olaitan frustrated after Beşiktaş defeat to Celtic
Interview
The defeat to Celtic left Junior Olaitan with regrets. After Beşiktaş’s 3-2 defeat on matchday four of the Europa League, the Benin international pointed to his team’s drop in tempo and costly passing errors. However, he remains convinced that the Istanbul side can respond.
A match that slipped away from Beşiktaş
Junior Olaitan believes Beşiktaş had made a good start to the contest. But after scoring, his team gradually lost its intensity, allowing Celtic to take control:
We lost. We had made a good start to our Europa League campaign. After the goal, we started playing slowly and lost our rhythm. Our opponents took advantage and made the most of their chances.
For Olaitan, the match could have unfolded differently if his team had not been so imprecise in possession. The midfielder believes Beşiktaş had been dominating before giving the ball away repeatedly.
It was a bad defeat. We were the ones dominating the match until we made passing errors and gave the ball to our opponents. I’m sorry, we lost the match.
A message focused on the response
Despite this disappointing result, the Benin international is urging his teammates not to give up. He notes that Beşiktaş had made a good start to its European campaign and stresses the importance of keeping up the hard work:
We were on a good run until this match. We have to keep working. We’ll do everything necessary and try to do better.
Individually, Olaitan continues to post impressive stats. With 3 goals and 7 assists in 19 appearances, he has 10 goal contributions this season. That takes him past his previous record of 9 contributions, set with Niort in 2022-2023. But after this European defeat, his priority is now to help Beşiktaş bounce back as a team.
