Amine Gouiri picked the perfect moment to show his talent. On Thursday, November 5, the Marseille striker scored the only goal in the away match against Bayer Leverkusen (1-0) on matchday four of the Europa League. It was a superb strike that earned OM their first points in the competition after three consecutive defeats.

A flash of brilliance to break the deadlock

Gouiri had already tried his luck in the 7th minute, but his shot was saved by Mark Flekken. After the break, the Dutch goalkeeper again denied the Marseille striker. But in the 77th minute, OM’s number 9 finally found a way through. After winning the ball back near the halfway line, he got past Robert Andrich, beat Edmond Tapsoba and curled a precise shot into the far corner.

A superb individual effort that earned the Olympians three valuable points.

“I don’t overthink it and curl it”

Speaking to Canal+, the Algerian international reflected on the goal, while admitting his frustration after missing a chance in the first half. “At half-time, I was furious about the chance I’d missed,” he said, before describing the goal:

I move out wide, get a little away from the middle, Ulisses plays it to me firmly, I wanted to let the ball run, the Bayer player misses it, then I go for it, I don’t overthink it and curl it.

The goal further underlines Gouiri’s growing importance in Marseille’s attack. Since arriving in Provence, he has now scored 28 goals and provided 11 assists in 55 appearances. With seven goals this season, he continues to make progress despite some inconsistent performances. This victory ends a run of three defeats in the league phase and also gives Marseille their first away win in a major European competition in some time.
