Galatasaray reopen pursuit of Virgil van Dijk

Galatasaray have reportedly not abandoned the idea of signing Virgil van Dijk. According to Fotomac, the Turkish club have revived their pursuit of the Dutch Liverpool defender, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Galatasaray still interested in Van Dijk

Having joined Liverpool in January 2018 from Southampton for around £75 million, Virgil van Dijk has established himself as one of the English side’s key players. The 35-year-old defender has notably won two Premier League titles and one Champions League with the Reds.

Captain of the Netherlands national team, he also finished second in the Ballon d’Or rankings in 2019. His contract with Liverpool is due to expire at the end of the season, and his future remains uncertain for now.

A January move appears complicated

According to Fotomac, Galatasaray are considering the possibility of signing Van Dijk during the winter transfer window. However, this option would run up against Liverpool’s desire to keep their captain until the end of the season. The Turkish club could therefore primarily seek to secure the defender’s arrival next summer.

From the beginning of the year, Van Dijk will indeed be free to negotiate with foreign clubs and sign a pre-contract for the following season. Galatasaray could therefore try to move quickly in the discussions in order to position themselves in this matter. Since joining Liverpool, Van Dijk has made 380 official appearances, scoring 36 goals and providing 16 assists. With the Netherlands, he also has 98 caps and 13 goals.
