German Cup: Leverkusen eliminated by a third division club
The unthinkable happened on Tuesday night in the German Cup semi-final: Arminia Bielefeld, a modest third division club, toppled Bayer Leverkusen (2-1), the defending champions and German titleholders.
Everything started well for Xabi Alonso's team, who opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Jonathan Tah. But the lead was short-lived: Worl equalized three minutes later, before Maximilian Grosser delivered the upset just before halftime.
Bielefeld, who have already knocked out four top-tier clubs in this edition, thus qualifies for the Berlin final, a first in decades. They will face the winner of the RB Leipzig-Stuttgart clash. Should they triumph, Arminia would secure a historic qualification for the Europa League!
