Granit Xhaka reveals the penalty imposed on him
The Swiss captain has received a suspended monetary penalty of 150,000 Swiss francs, with a two-year probation period.
Granit Xhaka now knows his punishment. The captain of Switzerland announced himself this Thursday that he had been convicted by the Lucerne Public Prosecutor’s Office in the case involving the fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate he obtained in 2022.
The Sunderland midfielder received 50 day-fines of 3,000 Swiss francs, for a total of 150,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to around 160,000 euros. However, the sentence is suspended for two years: it will therefore only be enforced if the player commits a new offence during this period.
Xhaka accepts responsibility
In his message posted on social media, the 34-year-old confirmed that he accepted the court’s decision.
“A few weeks ago, I stated that I accepted responsibility for my decision. I maintain that position.”
Xhaka also stated that he had given a full statement to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, paid the procedural costs and accepted the judgment. The legal case is therefore closed at this stage, although the sporting consequences for the Swiss national team have yet to be determined.
Absent from Switzerland’s latest camp
The midfielder chose not to take part in the Nati’s latest camp after the investigation was opened, in order to focus on the proceedings. The Swiss Football Association must now discuss the next stage of his international future with its captain.
At club level, however, Xhaka remains a key player for Sunderland. He started the first five Premier League matchdays of the season and also played in a Europa League match, making six starts in all competitions since the beginning of the 2026-2027w campaign.
