Hansi Flick wanted this Manchester City player
FC Barcelona considered signing Joško Gvardiol to strengthen their defence. According to Mundo Deportivo, Hansi Flick was particularly impressed by the Croatia international's profile. However, the deal did not materialise, with Manchester City considering their defender untouchable.
Gvardiol, a profile appreciated by Flick
At the end of 2025, FC Barcelona had explored the possibility of signing the Manchester City defender. Hansi Flick saw him as a player capable of meeting his team's needs, thanks to his defensive qualities and versatility.
Like Jules Koundé, who can play either in the centre or on the right, Gvardiol could be deployed as a centre-back or on the left flank. His left foot and his ability to build play cleanly from the back would also have appealed to the German coach.
Manchester City closes the door
The main obstacle came from Manchester City. The English club, which had signed Gvardiol from RB Leipzig for around €90 million, did not want to part with their defender. According to Mundo Deportivo, Pep Guardiola, who was then in charge of the Citizens, was also opposed to his departure.
Josko Gvardiol himself was not particularly interested in changing clubs. Settled in Manchester, where he earns a substantial salary, he saw no immediate reason to join a new team. The Croatia defender remains under contract with Manchester City until the summer of 2031.
