Hapoel Beer-Sheva: Forson Amankwah scores against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League
Ghanaian attacking midfielder Forson Amankwah scored against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on the second matchday of the league phase of the Europa League. His goal was not enough to prevent Hapoel Beer-Sheva from losing 2-1 in the Netherlands.
On loan from Norwich City, the 23-year-old equalised for both teams in the 55th minute. Set up by Zahi Ahmed in the box, he finished the move with a left-footed shot. AZ Alkmaar had opened the scoring six minutes earlier through Peer Koopmeiners. The Dutch side eventually regained the lead through a penalty converted by Mexx Meerdink in the 77th minute.
The goal came just a few days after a decisive performance in the Israeli league. On October 10, Forson Amankwah scored a goal and provided an assist in Hapoel Beer-Sheva’s 2-0 win over Ironi Tiberias. He scored in the 90th minute, after contributing to João Victor’s opening goal.
Having joined Israel on loan, the Ghana international is looking to gain consistency after his spell at Norwich City in England. His recent attacking contributions have helped him stand out for Hapoel Beer-Sheva, even though his team failed to secure a positive result in Alkmaar.
With this defeat, Hapoel Beer-Sheva are still searching for their first win in this European league phase. The Israeli club began its campaign with a 0-0 draw against Dinamo Zagreb on September 16.
Two caps for Ghana
Forson Amankwah has two caps for Ghana’s senior national team, with no goals scored. He made his international debut on March 22, 2024, against Nigeria, in a 2-1 friendly defeat. Four days later, he featured in the draw against Uganda (2-2), also in a friendly.
Since that appearance, the midfielder has not played for the Black Stars again. He had nevertheless been included in Ghana’s squad for several 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, notably against Niger and Angola, without coming off the bench.
His recent performances for Hapoel Beer-Sheva could help revive his prospects of earning a place in the national team. For now, the Ghanaian must continue performing for his club in order to potentially return to the Black Stars coaching staff’s plans.
