Inter Miami: Leo Messi makes his return
After his remarkable run at the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi is already back in training with Miami and is edging closer to a return in MLS.
Just ten days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final (0-1, a.e.t.), Lionel Messi has rejoined group training with Inter Miami. The Argentine captain, who tallied eight goals and four assists during the tournament, had enjoyed a few days of rest in Rosario.
Having missed his club’s first two matches after the World Cup, as well as the MLS All-Star Game, the 39-year-old forward could return to the squad as early as this weekend. Sitting second in the Eastern Conference, just two points behind Nashville, Miami is eager to get their playmaker back to defend their title.
An exceptional 2025 season
Messi is coming off a historic 2025 season. Across all competitions, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner played 49 matches, scored 43 goals, and provided 28 assists. In the regular Major League Soccer season alone, he racked up 29 goals and 19 assists in 28 matches.
These performances earned him the Golden Boot and a second consecutive MVP title. During the playoffs, the former Barcelona star added six goals and nine assists, before being named Man of the Match in the final win over Vancouver (3-1).

Four trophies since his arrival
Since arriving in Florida in July 2023, Messi has scored 90 goals in 104 matches across all competitions. In MLS regular season play, he boasts 62 goals and 45 assists in 67 appearances. Notably, he set the record for 100 goal contributions in MLS in just 64 games.
With Miami, the Argentine has lifted the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, the 2025 Eastern Conference title, and the 2025 MLS Cup. His return would thus be a massive boost for a team still chasing the top spot.
