MLS 2026: Lionel Messi retains his Golden Boot
Lionel Messi has once again topped the Major League Soccer scoring charts. At the end of the 2026 regular season, the Inter Miami star claims the Golden Boot with 26 goals. The second consecutive award allows him to further cement his name in the history of the North American league.
A historic double for the Argentine star
Although he failed to find the net in the final match against Charlotte FC (3-3), Messi had already secured first place in the scoring charts. At 39, the former FC Barcelona player scored 26 goals in 31 appearances. He did even better the previous season, with 29 goals, but this time retains his title ahead of particularly strong competition.
He thus becomes the first player to win the MLS Golden Boot in two consecutive seasons. He also joins the group of six players to have claimed the award more than once. His contribution goes beyond goals: Messi also provided 14 assists during the regular season. That total illustrates his importance to Inter Miami’s attack.
Petar Musa and Sam Surridge finish behind Messi
Petar Musa finished second. The FC Dallas striker scored 22 goals, four fewer than the winner. Sam Surridge, who plays for Nashville SC, completes the podium with 21 goals. Brian White (Vancouver Whitecaps) follows with 20, while Milan Iloski and Rafael Navarro each scored 19.
With this latest trophy, Messi confirms his individual dominance in MLS. Since arriving in the United States in 2023, the Argentine has continued to collect accolades and has just achieved a feat never before seen in the league’s history.
