Ghana captain Jordan Ayew finally opened his goalscoring account for Sheffield United on Saturday 7 November 2026 finding the net in a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Charlton Athletic in the English Championship.

The 35 year old forward scored in the 25th minute at The Valley, cancelling out Millenic Alli's early opener and bringing Chris Wilder's side level after the hosts had taken the lead in the 12th minute.

Ayew's equaliser marked his first competitive goal for Sheffield United since joining the club on a free transfer in September ending a frustrating wait for the experienced Ghanaian international.

However, his personal milestone was overshadowed by Charlton's late winner, as substitute Matty Godden struck in the 79th minute to secure all three points for the home side.

Jordan Ayew finally breaks his Sheffield United goal drought

After several appearances without scoring, Ayew delivered the breakthrough he had been seeking since his arrival at Bramall Lane.

The former Leicester City and Crystal Palace forward started alongside Ben Brereton Díaz in Sheffield United's attack and responded to Charlton's early advantage with an important equaliser.

His 25th minute goal restored parity and ensured the visitors entered half-time with the score level at 1-1.

Ayew remained on the pitch until the 71st minute when he was replaced by Tom Cannon as Wilder attempted to find a winning goal.

Instead, Charlton regained control of the scoreline eight minutes later through Godden who had entered the contest as a substitute.

The 2-1 defeat ended Sheffield United's three match winning run in the Championship, following victories over Bristol City, Wrexham and Preston North End.

Despite the disappointing result, Ayew's maiden goal represented a significant individual step forward.

From waiting for a goal to delivering on his promise

The timing of Ayew's breakthrough was particularly notable given his recent comments about his search for a first Sheffield United goal.

Speaking ahead of the club's previous Championship fixtures, the Ghanaian forward had stressed that helping his teammates achieve positive results mattered more than his individual statistics.

He remained confident that his first goal would eventually arrive, explaining that his patience and commitment to the team would ultimately be rewarded.

That confidence proved justified against Charlton, although the result denied him the perfect celebration.

Ayew had already been influential during Sheffield United's 1-0 victory over Wrexham on 30 October.

His curling effort was saved by goalkeeper Anthony Patterson but the rebound fell to Brereton Díaz, who converted the decisive goal.

Following that performance, Wilder praised the Ghanaian's contribution, highlighting his experience, link up play and ability to operate as a central striker despite having joined the squad without a full pre season.

Saturday's goal provided another indication that Ayew is becoming increasingly involved in Sheffield United's attacking plans.

A new chapter for Ghana's experienced captain

Ayew joined Sheffield United on 8 September 2026 after leaving Leicester City at the end of the previous campaign.

The Ghana international signed a one year contract, bringing extensive English football experience from spells with Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester.

His arrival offered Wilder an experienced attacking alternative capable of playing across several forward positions.

The move also marked an important new chapter for a player who continues to play a leading role in Ghanaian football.

As Foot Africa previously highlighted in its profile of Ghana's Black Stars, Ayew has developed into one of the national team's most influential senior figures, combining experience with leadership responsibilities.

He also featured in Carlos Queiroz's Ghana squad for the 2026 World Cup and remained central to the national team's plans, despite an injury setback during the opening stages of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

His first Sheffield United goal therefore represents more than another entry in his career statistics.

It provides a confidence boost for an experienced African forward attempting to establish himself in a new environment at the age of 35.
