Newcastle United: Yoane Wissa Steps Up to Take Responsibility
Yoane Wissa wants to play a part in Newcastle United’s revival. With the club going through a difficult period in the Premier League, the DR Congo international has called on his teammates to stay united and maintain a positive mindset.
Appointed to the club’s Player Leadership Group by manager Matthias Jaissle ahead of the season, the 30-year-old is determined to embrace his new responsibility.
Wissa Takes on a New Role in the Dressing Room
Signed from Brentford for £55 million last summer, Yoane Wissa is still struggling to reproduce his best form in a Newcastle shirt. After a difficult first season, he had made an encouraging start to the new campaign, delivering an impressive performance against Liverpool on the opening day before scoring in a 2-0 victory over Tottenham.
However, that remains his only league goal so far. The Congolese striker also had a penalty saved during Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Hull City in September before gradually losing his place in the starting XI. Joe Willock and Will Osula have both been preferred to him in recent weeks. Despite this situation, Matthias Jaissle has entrusted him with an important responsibility. Wissa is one of five players in the Leadership Group, alongside Dan Burn, Joelinton, Malick Thiaw and Lewis Miley.
Newcastle Struggling as Wissa Calls for a Response
The Magpies’ recent form underlines the importance of Wissa’s message. After remaining unbeaten in their first five league matches, Newcastle have won just two of their last seven games, losing the other five. Their most recent setback came on Monday, when they suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Everton. The result prompted supporters to boo the team at the final whistle.
In these difficult circumstances, Wissa wants to help maintain unity within the squad. Speaking to supporters through the club’s official matchday programme, he explained his determination to bring energy and positivity to the dressing room:
It’s a new role for me and I know the Head Coach has trust in me to bring energy and positivity, and of course most importantly, try to score goals and help the team win games.
“We Must Be United as a Team”
The Congolese forward believes Newcastle have enough quality to overcome their current difficulties. However, he insists that maintaining collective confidence is essential, particularly within a relatively young squad :
When times are tough, I try to talk to the guys and be positive in every moment, because we have a young squad. But we know that we have a lot of quality and we just need to focus on that and make sure that everyone stays together.
Wissa also acknowledged that the squad must find the right balance, both mentally and physically, to get back to winning ways. His message also extended to the supporters, whose backing he values despite the team’s recent struggles:
We must be united as a squad and also channel the energy of our fans. We always want to win for the badge of the club, but especially so for you when we hear you screaming our names and supporting us.
By speaking out publicly, Yoane Wissa has shown his determination to embrace his leadership role at Newcastle. Beyond his individual performances, the Congolese striker now wants to help the team rediscover its confidence and consistency.
