Olwethu Makhanya: former Rangers player tips him for Liverpool

Olwethu Makhanya is already attracting high expectations in Scotland. Impressed by the South African defender’s performances since his arrival at Rangers, former club player Maurice Ross believes he has the potential to join a team like Liverpool.

Maurice Ross convinced of Makhanya’s potential

Speaking on the SNN Sports Podcast, Maurice Ross praised the defensive qualities of the young South African international. The former Rangers defender highlighted his athleticism, composure in possession and commitment to his defensive duties. He even believes the defender has what it takes to reach the very highest level in Europe directly, without necessarily having to move through several clubs first:

I think Makhanya has the potential to reach the top. He is athletic, composed on the ball, likes defending and genuinely enjoys his role as a defender.

The former player also discussed Virgil van Dijk’s career, from Celtic to Southampton before joining Liverpool. In his view, this is an example of the opportunities available to defenders who stand out in the Scottish league.

Makhanya compared to Jean-Alain Boumsong

Maurice Ross also drew a comparison between Olwethu Makhanya and Jean-Alain Boumsong, the former France international who played for Rangers before joining Newcastle United. Boumsong’s transfer to the English club was reportedly worth €11.3 million. Despite the former French defender’s career, Ross believes the young South African has greater potential.

“I think he is better than Boumsong, who eventually joined Newcastle,” he added. The remark reflects the confidence the former Scottish defender has in Makhanya. At 22, the player is receiving encouraging recognition as he continues to adapt to Scottish football.
