2027 AFCON qualifiers: Burundi call up Van Persie
Burundi may have unearthed a new gem. Aged 20, Karim Van Persie Mperanyi has been called up to the national team for the first time. The NAC Breda winger is included in coach Patrick Sangwa’s squad for the two matches against Zambia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
A first reward after making his professional debut
The call-up caps an important period for the young forward. On October 16, Karim Van Persie Mperanyi made his debut for NAC Breda’s first team after being selected for the match against Helmond Sport by coach Rick Kruys.
The player had shared his joy at joining the squad, before eventually getting the chance to make his first appearance on the pitch. He explained, among other things, that his coach had told him to play freely and not put himself under pressure.
Why is Van Persie his middle name?
The young Burundian’s name has not gone unnoticed in the Netherlands. His middle name, Van Persie, is directly linked to former Dutch striker Robin van Persie. “My father was a huge Arsenal and Robin van Persie fan. That’s why I was given Van Persie as my middle name when I was born,” the player explained.
Mperanyi could now make his first international appearance in the two-match tie against Zambia. Both matches count toward qualification for the 2027 AFCON. After two rounds, Burundi sit bottom of a group that also includes Algeria, Zambia and Togo. Only the top two nations will qualify for the final tournament.
