The year of the great farewell: 2026 writes final chapter in international careers of greatest football legends in world and Africa

The year 2026 will be remembered as one of the most emotional turning points in international football history, with some of the game's greatest figures announcing the end of their national-team careers.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Manuel Neuer and Riyad Mahrez are among the iconic players who have decided to step away from international football, bringing an end to careers that defined an entire generation.

The conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026 accelerated this extraordinary wave of departures, with several established stars choosing to make their final appearances on the biggest international stage.

For African football, the transformation has been particularly significant. Algeria, Senegal, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Ghana have all lost experienced players whose contributions helped shape some of the continent's most successful national teams.

With Ronaldo confirming his retirement on 5 November, just over two months after Messi's announcement, the departures have now reached two of the most influential footballers of the modern era.

Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi: The end of football's greatest international rivalry

For more than two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominated discussions about individual greatness, repeatedly rewriting records while leading Portugal and Argentina respectively.

Now, both have officially closed their international careers in the same year.

Ronaldo announced his decision on Thursday 5 November ending an extraordinary 23 year journey with Portugal.

As Foot Africa reported following his announcement, the 41 year old finishes with 234 international appearances and 146 goals, both records in men's international football.

His achievements include Portugal's historic Euro 2016 triumph and UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo also became the first player to score at six different World Cups, underlining his remarkable longevity at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Messi had announced his international retirement on 31 August, bringing an end to a career that transformed Argentina's modern football history.

The eight time Ballon d'Or winner led his country to the 2021 Copa América title before achieving his ultimate ambition by winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He subsequently added another Copa America title in 2024 and guided Argentina to the World Cup 2026 final where they suffered a narrow defeat against Spain.

For a generation of supporters who grew up watching Messi and Ronaldo compete for football's greatest honours, their departures represent much more than the retirement of two individual stars.

They mark the conclusion of one of the most celebrated eras in international football.

Neymar and Manuel Neuer: Two more legends leave the world stage

The World Cup 2026 also brought an emotional conclusion to Neymar's international career with Brazil.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain forward announced his retirement following Brazil's elimination against Norway in the round of 16.

As Foot Africa highlighted in its coverage, Neymar's final World Cup appearance marked the end of a remarkable journey that began in August 2010.

The 34 year old finishes as Brazil's all time leading scorer, with 80 goals in 130 international appearances, according to FIFA.

Although the World Cup title eluded him, Neymar leaves behind an extraordinary individual legacy, having helped Brazil win the 2013 Confederations Cup and its first Olympic men's football gold medal in 2016.

Germany, meanwhile, said farewell to Manuel Neuer for a second time.

The legendary goalkeeper initially retired from international football after Euro 2024 but returned for one final World Cup campaign in 2026.

Following Germany's elimination, Neuer confirmed that his international journey was over.

The World Cup 2014 winner concludes his Germany career with 128 appearances and a reputation as one of the goalkeepers who transformed the position through his adventurous playing style.

Mexico's Guillermo Ochoa and Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick also ended their international careers following the tournament, adding to an increasingly remarkable list of departures.

Riyad Mahrez & Aissa Mandi: Algeria loses two champions of 2019

While global attention has focused on Messi and Ronaldo, African football is experiencing a generational transition of its own.

Algeria has been particularly affected by the retirement of two figures from its victorious Africa Cup of Nations 2019 squad.

Riyad Mahrez confirmed his international retirement on July 3 after Algeria's defeat against Switzerland at the World Cup.

As Foot Africa reported at the time, the former Manchester City winger ended his 12 year international career immediately after the elimination.

Mahrez departs with 119 appearances and 40 goals, according to the Confederation of African Football.

His most memorable international achievement came in 2019 when he captained Algeria to their second Africa Cup of Nations title.

His dramatic stoppage time free kick against Nigeria in the semi finals remains one of the most iconic goals in the tournament's recent history.

Defender Aissa Mandi also announced his international retirement in July.

With more than 110 appearances, Mandi was a central figure in Algeria's defensive organisation and another important member of the 2019 championship winning squad.

Their departures leave Algeria facing the difficult task of replacing not only their technical qualities but also their experience and leadership.

Emerging talents such as Ibrahim Maza, Anis Hadj Moussa, Mohamed Amoura and Amine Gouiri now have an opportunity to assume greater responsibility in the national team's next chapter.

Senegal bids farewell to Edouard Mendy and Cheikhou Kouyate

Senegal has also witnessed the departure of prominent figures from the generation that delivered the country's first Africa Cup of Nations title.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy announced his international retirement in September after eight years representing the Lions of Teranga.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper finished with 59 appearances and 31 clean sheets, according to CAF.

He was a decisive figure in Senegal's historic victory over Egypt in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final, which was played in February 2022.

Mendy kept a clean sheet throughout the match and extra time before helping Senegal secure the trophy in a penalty shootout.

His achievements also included individual recognition as one of the world's leading goalkeepers.

In October, Cheikhou Kouyaté brought his professional playing career to an end, closing another chapter in Senegalese football history.

The experienced midfielder represented Senegal 92 times and was part of the squad that won the country's first continental title.

As Foot Africa examined in a special report, their departures represent a major transition for the Lions of Teranga.

However, the renewal process also creates opportunities for emerging players such as Lamine Camara and Pape Matar Sarr who are expected to become increasingly influential in the years ahead.

Saiss, Fofana, Seri and Williams: Africa's other major departures

The retirement wave extends beyond Algeria and Senegal.

Morocco lost one of its most influential modern captains when Romain Saïss announced his international retirement on 23 February.

The defender made 86 appearances for the Atlas Lions and played a pivotal leadership role during Morocco's extraordinary run to the semi finals of the World Cup 2022.

As Foot Africa reported following his farewell, Saiss described representing Morocco as the greatest honour of his career.

Ivory Coast has also lost two members of its 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winning generation.

Jean Michael Seri ended his international career in July after more than a decade representing the Elephants.

The experienced midfielder was part of the squad that won the continental title on home soil in February 2024.

Seko Fofana followed in September announcing his retirement at the age of 31 after 34 international appearances.

The departures of both players remove valuable experience from Ivory Coast's midfield at a time when the national team is preparing for another continental campaign.

Ghana, meanwhile, said farewell to Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams.

The striker announced his retirement in September after representing the Black Stars at two World Cups and earning 28 international appearances.

His decision brings an end to a four year international journey that began when he chose to represent the country of his parents.

As Foot Africa documented in its report on seven African international departures, the departures have affected several of Africa's most established national teams.

2026: The year an unforgettable football generation stepped aside

From Messi's World Cup winning Argentina career to Ronaldo's record breaking journey with Portugal, 2026 has delivered a remarkable succession of international farewells.

Neymar leaves Brazil as its leading scorer, Neuer departs Germany as a World Cup winning goalkeeper and Mahrez exits Algeria as the captain of a continental championship-winning generation.

For African football, the departures of Mendy, Saiss, Mandi, Seri, Fofana and Williams further illustrate the scale of the transition.

Some of these players will continue representing their clubs while others have brought their entire professional careers to an end.

But their international chapters are now closed.

The trophies, historic performances and unforgettable moments they delivered will remain part of football history.
