MLS: historic change announced (Official)
North American soccer is set for a historic change. Major League Soccer (MLS) officially announced its calendar change on Friday.
Starting in summer 2027, MLS will adopt a format similar to that of the major European leagues. The American league will be played over a season running from summer to the following spring. The 2027-2028 season will therefore begin in mid-July 2027 and end in May 2028, with a winter break between mid-December and the beginning of February.
This strategic change is intended to facilitate transfers, align the calendar with international competitions and enhance MLS’s visibility on the global stage.
An interim season planned
To ensure this transition, the league will organize a shortened interim season between February and May 2027. It will be called the “Sprint Season.” It will consist of 14 league matchdays, followed by playoffs and an MLS Cup final scheduled for May.
Each team will face the 14 clubs in its conference once at home and once away. With this reform, MLS intends to take another step forward in its development and move closer to the way the most prestigious leagues in the world operate.
