Bayern Munich: €5 million expected for a friendly against Ajax in Nairobi

Bayern Munich could receive €5 million for its trip to Kenya, where it will face Ajax Amsterdam on 5 January 2027. The friendly is also scheduled to mark the inauguration of the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi.

Bayern Munich is preparing to secure a lucrative financial deal in Africa. The German club is expected to pocket €5 million from an exhibition match against Ajax Amsterdam, scheduled for 5 January 2027 in Nairobi, Kenya. The amount has been reported by several media outlets, but has not yet been officially confirmed by either club.

The match will be played at the Raila Odinga International Stadium, a new 60,000-seat venue. The event is intended to mark the inauguration of the stadium, built as part of Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

Rouven Kasper at the heart of the organisation

The trip is part of Bayern Munich’s international development strategy. Rouven Kasper, a member of the club’s executive board responsible in particular for marketing and sales, is overseeing the arrangements for the match. The aim is to strengthen the Bavarian club’s presence in the African market and consolidate its links with its many supporters across the continent.

Coach Vincent Kompany has also reportedly given his approval for the trip. The decision would allow the club to combine its commercial ambitions with an international visibility operation.

A showcase for African football

Beyond the clash between two major European institutions, the match represents an important occasion for Kenya. Hosting Bayern Munich and Ajax should give Nairobi’s new stadium international visibility and help promote the country’s sports infrastructure just a few months before the 2027 AFCON.

For Bayern, the trip could generate €5 million from a single match. It is a particularly attractive commercial operation that illustrates the growing importance of the African market in the development strategies of major European clubs.

On 5 January 2027, Nairobi will therefore be at the centre of football attention, with a European clash taking place on African soil.
