Italy: AC Milan and Inter Milan unveil Generali Stadium

The two Milan clubs have officially announced the name of their future shared stadium, which is due to host its first matches during the 2031-2032 season. The project is expected to turn the page on San Siro, while the value of the partnership with insurer Generali is estimated at €650 million, according to several media outlets.

Milan football is preparing to write a new chapter in its history. AC Milan and Inter Milan have officially unveiled the name of their future shared stadium: Generali Stadium. The new venue is due to open during the 2031-2032 season, according to the schedule announced by the two clubs.

This project marks a new stage in the modernization of Milan’s sports infrastructure. The two historic rivals, who currently share the Giuseppe-Meazza stadium, better known as San Siro, are preparing to move into a venue designed to meet the demands of modern football.

Generali Stadium, the new face of Milan football

The choice of the name Generali Stadium stems from a partnership with Italian insurer Generali, which will associate its brand with the future infrastructure. According to several reports carried by the press, the naming-rights agreement could reach €650 million over a period extending to 2052.

However, this figure should be treated with caution: the clubs’ official communications confirm the partnership but do not publicly detail all of its financial terms.

Beyond its commercial name, the future stadium is set to become a major facility for the two Milan teams. It is expected to host their home matches and provide a setting suited to supporters’ expectations, operational requirements and the commercial ambitions of both clubs.

San Siro approaches the end of an era

The arrival of Generali Stadium also raises questions about San Siro’s future. Inaugurated in 1926 and expanded several times since then, the Giuseppe-Meazza stadium is associated with some of the greatest chapters in Italian and European football.

AC Milan and Inter have played memorable matches there, particularly in the league and European competitions. Its name remains closely tied to Milan’s sporting identity.

The new stadium project should allow the two clubs to have a renewed infrastructure. However, the exact fate of the entire San Siro site must be distinguished from announcements concerning the new venue: the precise plans for its transformation or demolition must be assessed on the basis of official decisions regarding the site.

Opening targeted for 2031-2032

The announced schedule calls for an opening during the 2031-2032 season, with construction expected to begin in 2028, subject to the necessary approvals.

Until then, several administrative and operational steps will have to be completed. Adherence to the schedule will depend in particular on the project’s progress and the completion of the work.

For AC Milan and Inter Milan, Generali Stadium represents a major change in their sporting and economic environment. For Milan, it also means preparing the future of one of the most iconic sites in European football, without erasing San Siro’s historic legacy.

The target is now set for 2031-2032, although the project’s full implementation remains conditional on the completion of the various planned stages.
